If you encounter a paper jam on the Brother MFC J497DW printer, follow these steps to resolve it. Take care not to touch the plastic strip that is found along the width of the machine's interior. Doing so can cause damage to the Brother printer.

  • Power off the Brother MFC J497DW printer and detach the power cable from the rear Power port.
  • Take the paper tray 1 out of the Brother machine. There are two levers in the paper tray 1 slot on either side.
  • Push the one on the left towards the left and the one on the right towards the right at the same time.
  • This releases the jammed paper from the paper tray 1 slot. 
  • Hold the plastic tabs on the left and right side of the Brother printer and lift the scanner cover until it locks into a place.
  • Grasp the jammed paper carefully with both hands and remove it from the machine.
  • If you see an inside/front error message, follow these steps. With the scanner cover still open, slide the printhead to the left and right. This will reveal paper jams under the printhead. Use your two hands to remove the jammed paper from under the printhead. (To move the printhead, grab the printhead at the two concave triangle marks on its top.) Close the scanner cover.
  • Go to the Brother MFC J497DW printer's rear side and locate the jam clear cover levers. Use two fingers to push the two levers towards each other in a pinching motion. This releases the jam clear cover.
  • Lower the jam clear cover and then remove the jammed paper from the jam clear area. Close the Brother machine's rear cover and ensure that it is closed correctly.
  • Reattach the Brother MFC J497DW printer's paper tray and extend the paper support & support flap. Attach the Brother machine's power cable and turn the printer on.
